Let us start with the number everyone wants. A standard residential solar panel today measures roughly 1.7 metres by 1.1 metres, call it about 1.8 to 2 square metres each. Once you allow a little spacing between panels and rows, and clearance from roof edges, planning around 2 square metres per panel is a sensible, honest rule of thumb.

Why usable roof is less than total roof
Your roof's total footprint and its usable solar footprint are two different numbers, and the gap between them is where roof-space planning actually lives.
